As passionate curators of exceptional eyewear, Michael and Kay recently returned from a trip to Japan, specifically the revered eyewear-making regions of Fukui and Sabae, where tradition, technology, and artistry converge.
We were honoured to be hosted by our favourite designer, Toshiaki Yamagishi, his family and his work team, especially Yuko, who did an amazing job translating.
We were first welcomed with an evening of Omakase. Omakase is a refined culinary art in Japan, where the chef curates a multi-course tasting experience based on the freshest seasonal ingredients. At the exclusive sushi restaurant we visited in Kanazawa, only 12 guests are served each evening, allowing the chef to prepare each piece with absolute precision. Every movement is an art, from slicing to plating, reflecting decades of training and tradition. It’s not just dinner; it’s a performance of skill, intuition, and respect for the ingredients. This set the tone for what was to come and the craftsmanship we saw in Japan’s finest eyewear makers.

Known as the cradle of Japanese eyewear, Sabae and Fukui are home to the finest independent factories in the world, and we were privileged to visit some of them firsthand with Toshiyaki and Yuko. Each factory is a specialist, handcrafting just one part of the frame with obsessive attention to detail.
From the beautiful sheets of acetate being hand-sculpted, to lightweight Japanese titanium shaped with near-microscopic precision, this is true artistry. Every hinge, every polish, every fit is executed to perfection, resulting in eyewear that delivers unsurpassed comfort, quality, and luxury.
Watching these skilled artisans work, was a privilege. Each piece is not only made by hand, it’s made with exceptional care and dedication by highly experienced and trained experts.
