The Best and Brightest
Our team of passionate eyewear consultants understand a frame must be appropriate for the optical requirements, but most importantly, it should reflect a personality and way of life.
Optometrist, Clinical Director
Co-owner/optometrist, Michael Holmes qualified in Britain in 1988 and emigrated to N.Z. in 1991, where he has practiced since. In 1998 Michael established his own business, which has developed over the years along with his growing loyal client base into two independent stores committed to providing the highest quality independent eyewear as well as comprehensive eye care.
With almost 30 years clinical experience, Michael has considerable expertise in finding creative solutions for complex visual requirements with a particular interest being workplace vision. Whatever your visual requirements, whether it be glasses, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses or effective and durable sports eyewear, Michael is here to help.
Michael and co-owner Kay have 3 boys. When he is not busy with one of the kids, Michael enjoys some straight forward hobbies: travelling, craft beer and trail running. Hopefully you won’t ever bump into him jogging along the waterfront or around Newmarket in his lycra.
Co-owner Kay McFarlane is responsible for the unique market position of Michael Holmes Premium Eyewear focusing on enduring design by independent eyewear designers. Her key role is to ensure the business keeps moving forward and exceeding customer expectations.
An enjoyment of beautiful things means curating a collection of independent eyewear is her dream job. It’s like Christmas, when new frames arrive, as Kay can be heard shrieking with joy, carefully unpacking and enjoying each new frame.
Outside of work? Managing two stores and a family of 3 boys, there isn’t much room for “hobbies” but having a glass of wine on a Friday night with husband and co-owner Michael Holmes is top of her list. She also enjoys travelling, with Scandinavia and Japan being favourite destinations.
Grace Elliott has a special interest in ocular disease and children’s vision but is responsible for all aspects of eye care including assessment of clarity of vision, binocularity, fitting of spectacle and contact lenses as well as the monitoring and treatment of eye disease, for which she is qualified to prescribe ocular medication. Grace takes a holistic approach to eye care, her clinical expertise extending beyond the testing room and into the realm of dispensing.
With a passion for design and photography, when it comes to new glasses, customers always benefit from Grace’s keen eye and attention to detail. We receive regular feedback from happy customers who tell us Grace’s expertise as well as her sense of fun, makes selecting new glasses a very enjoyable experience.
After a long day testing eyes and helping people find the perfect frame, Grace enjoys going home and relaxing with her two gorgeous Birman cats named Evie and Rudy.
Zane Stellingwerf commenced work at MHPE in 2015 and is our latest addition to the clinical team. Having worked in a busy practice in Whanganui, he has valuable and wide ranging clinical experience. Zane is responsible for all aspects of eye health care and as someone with a passion for technology, he keeps us on our toes with changes and updates in clinical equipment.
His particular interests are dispensing contact lenses, also helping sports people enhance their game with the best choices for their visual requirements. Aside of his clinical abilities, Zane has taken a shine to life outside the testing room and is passionate about our range of beautifully engineered, independent designers.
Days off? Zane is partial to a bit of computer gaming (and we hear he is rather good).
Trainee Dispensing Optician
As a trainee dispensing optician, Kristi Pokoati is responsible for all aspects of customer service including supporting our optometrists and dispensing lenses under their guidance.
A people person, Kristi enjoys getting to know customers and matching beautiful eyewear with personality. She has an exceptional knack for placing the right frame on the right face.
On her days off, Kristi usually hits the books but, when she isn’t studying, she can be found enjoying the outdoors or having a great time on her snowboard.
Kendall Watt joined us after graduating from AUT with a Bachelor of Design. Kendall is blessed with a high level of creativity as well as being very organised. We rely on her to oversee all our daily operations and ensure standards are maintained.
Having worn glasses since she was a young child, Kendall is very devoted to helping people feel fantastic in their new frames. Her design focus is especially useful when narrowing down the frame choice to reach that final decision.
When enjoying time out, Kendall likes walking in the Waitakeres and hanging out with good friends.
Tracey has a wide variety of experience as a customs officer, a private investigator and mother of two children. It’s funny how things turn out because working with beautiful eyewear is now Tracey’s forte, she is our frame queen.
Her passion and enthusiasm for frame selection is abundantly obvious from the moment a customer walks in the door, nothing is too much trouble and she is completely honest. If a frame isn’t right, Tracey will say and keep you on track to make the right decision.
In keeping with her vibrant personality, Tracey is an action adventurer, enjoying cycling, running, hiking and abseiling.
